Ontario's large cities put a lot of HVAC companies in front of the same homeowners, which makes profit-first discipline especially valuable here. When paid clicks are expensive and every street has three companies advertising, the owners who know their cost per booked job by job type, and who book more of the calls they buy, are the ones whose marketing keeps paying.
The Ontario market and its buyers
Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, London, Markham and Vaughan are the largest municipalities, and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area alone is a dense patchwork of competing service areas. Northern Ontario is a different market entirely, with longer winters, smaller centres and more travel.
In the GTA, cost per booked job usually depends less on bid prices and more on two things: how tightly campaigns match the neighbourhoods your crews reach quickly, and how many paid calls your office actually books. In smaller cities, local reputation and review volume carry more weight relative to ad spend.
Fuel mix and job value
According to Statistics Canada, 58% of Ontario households used natural gas, 18% used electricity and 4% used propane for their primary heating system in 2023. Gas furnace work remains the core of most job mixes, with heat pumps growing as a distinct, higher-ticket line, and propane and oil conversions mattering in rural areas.
Separate these in your margin map:
- gas furnace replacement and repair
- cold-climate heat pumps, ducted and ductless
- air conditioning, which fills the summer in southern Ontario
- water heaters, including rentals versus owned units if you offer both
- rural fuel conversions from propane or oil
Climate and the Ontario calendar
Southern Ontario's winters are cold but moderated near the Great Lakes, and summers bring real cooling demand. Northern Ontario has longer, colder heating seasons.
In the south, that gives two peaks, winter heating and summer cooling, with spring and fall shoulders in between. Those shoulders are the natural home for maintenance visits and heat pump quotes. In the north, the heating peak dominates. The job mix and shoulder seasons guide explains how to plan two-peak and one-peak calendars.
Programs to know, as of October 2026
- The Home Renovation Savings Program, run by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas with provincial support, offers rebates on single upgrades, including up to $7,500 for a cold-climate air source heat pump and up to $12,000 for ground source, as well as bundled upgrades after a home energy assessment. No closure notice appeared on official pages as of October 22, 2026.
- The Energy Affordability Program provides free upgrades for income-eligible households, including a limited-time stream of free cold-climate heat pumps for eligible oil-heated homes.
- Ontario had no Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement as of October 22, 2026.
The profit implication. A rebate of up to $7,500 can transform the close rate on heat pump quotes. That raises what you can afford to pay per booked heat pump quote, because more of those quotes become sales. Re-run the ceiling for heat pump work with your actual post-rebate close rate, and make sure messaging is accurate and links the program.
Regulators and rules to know
For reference only; take compliance questions to the regulator.
- TSSA: fuels safety, including natural gas, propane and fuel oil. Fuels work is limited to TSSA-registered contractors whose gas technicians hold TSSA certification.
- ESA: electrical safety and contractor licensing. Only licensed electrical contractors may bid on or advertise electrical work, which matters if your ads mention panel or wiring work.
- WSIB: workplace safety and insurance.
- Skilled Trades Ontario: trade certification.
How we would approach an Ontario plan
- Map service areas by drive time and set cost-per-booked-job targets by zone.
- Split furnace, heat pump and cooling campaigns so each is judged on its own ceiling.
- Make sure ad copy stays within what your licences allow, especially around electrical work.
- Put booking-rate coaching early in the plan, because in a crowded market an unanswered call goes straight to a competitor.
- Use the two shoulder seasons for members and quotes.

Frequently asked questions
Can my HVAC company advertise electrical work in Ontario?
Only if you hold the right licence. ESA rules mean electrical work done for others needs a Licensed Electrical Contractor, and an unlicensed company may not bid on or advertise that work. Check with ESA if your heat pump or panel work crosses into electrical.
Do Ontario heat pump rebates change my marketing?
They change your close rate. When customers can see a clear rebate path, heat pump quotes are easier to close. Keep messaging precise, name the program and link Save on Energy so customers confirm current terms.
Is there an Ontario-specific HVAC.Agency site?
Yes. HVAC.Digital is the group's Ontario-focused HVAC marketing brand, and it sits alongside HVAC.Agency. HVACProfit.ca adds the profit-first measurement layer for Ontario owners.
