Profit-first HVAC marketing in Prince Edward Island

More than a third of PEI homes heat mainly with a heat pump, and the island's main heat pump rebates closed in 2026. Profit now depends on maintenance members, service quality and selling replacements at full price.

Prince Edward Island is a heat pump province. More than a third of homes use one as their main heating system, and many others still rely on oil. With the main efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates closed in 2026, island HVAC companies are selling into a market where customers already own the equipment and new sales happen at full price. That puts maintenance agreements, service reputation and value-based quoting at the centre of profit.

The PEI market and its buyers

Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall are the largest communities, and most companies serve much of the island from one base. The market is small and word travels fast, so reviews and repeat customers carry more weight than in a large city.

Because travel distances are short compared with larger provinces, a company can often cover the whole island. Even so, every hour on the road reduces gross profit, so track it in your margin map rather than assuming it away.

Fuel mix and job value

According to Statistics Canada, 28% of PEI households used oil, 18% used electricity and 8% used wood for their primary heating system in 2023, and heat pumps were the primary system for 36% of households. The resulting job lines:

  • Heat pump maintenance, the largest recurring opportunity on the island
  • Heat pump repair and replacement, as earlier installs age
  • Oil system service, still important for many homes
  • Oil-to-heat-pump conversions, now mostly at full price

With such a large installed base, maintenance members may be worth more to a PEI company than almost any campaign it can run. The maintenance agreement guide shows how to put a value on a member.

Climate and the PEI calendar

PEI's maritime winters are cold and snowy but moderated by the surrounding Gulf of St. Lawrence. Heat pumps run in both heating and cooling seasons, which supports spring and fall maintenance visits and spreads demand across more months.

Programs to know, as of October 2026

  • The efficiencyPEI Free Heat Pump Program, which included oil-to-heat-pump co-delivery, shows applications as closed; the closing date was not confirmed.
  • The residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026. Purchases made from April 15, 2025 to April 15, 2026 may still qualify if the application is made within one year of purchase.
  • Under a Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement announced June 29, 2026, about $15 million expands free attic and basement insulation for more than 1,800 income-qualified homeowners. Current intake details were not verified.

The profit implication. When rebates disappear, close rates on new heat pump quotes usually fall, and owners are tempted to discount. Discounting a high-ticket job can erase much of its gross profit. A better route is to sell on service: maintenance included in the first year, clear warranties, fast response. Then make sure those new owners become members.

How we would approach a PEI plan

  1. Make maintenance agreement marketing the first priority, aimed at the large heat pump base.
  2. Rewrite heat pump pages and quotes for a no-rebate market, and remove any outdated rebate claims.
  3. Keep paid spend modest and measured, using cost-per-booked-job tracking.
  4. Ask every satisfied customer for a review; on a small island, reputation compounds, and a strong review record lowers the cost of every booked job that follows.

Frequently asked questions

Are efficiencyPEI heat pump rebates still available?

As of October 2026, the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026, and the Free Heat Pump Program page says applications are closed. Purchases made between April 15, 2025 and April 15, 2026 may still apply within one year of purchase. Confirm with efficiencyPEI before mentioning either.

Is PEI too small for a dedicated marketing plan?

Not if the plan is sized to the market. A small market needs fewer campaigns and less spend, but the same discipline: ceilings by job type, tracked bookings and a strong maintenance base.

Which licences matter for HVAC companies on PEI?

PEI requires, among others, a Mechanical Contractor Licence for boiler and pressure vessel work and an LP Gas Personnel Licence for people servicing propane appliances. We list them for reference; confirm requirements with PEI Inspection Services.
