Profit-first HVAC marketing in Manitoba

Manitoba splits between gas and electric heat, has one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada, and offers heat pump rebates through Efficiency Manitoba. Each of those changes your job values and ceilings.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Manitoba gives HVAC companies a mixed market. About half of homes heat with natural gas and a third with electricity, the heating season is among the longest in southern Canada, and Efficiency Manitoba runs heat pump rebates that change the customer's net price. A profit-first plan here treats gas work and heat pump work as two businesses with their own numbers.

The Manitoba market and its buyers

Winnipeg holds most of the province's demand, with Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie and Thompson as the other larger centres. In Winnipeg, competition for common heating searches is strong, so booking rate and campaign targeting decide much of your cost per booked job. In the smaller centres, local reputation and a well-kept Google Business Profile carry a lot of weight.

Thompson and the North bring travel and logistics costs that must be part of any job-value calculation.

Fuel mix and job value

The 2023 Statistics Canada numbers put Manitoba at 52% of homes heating mainly with natural gas and 33% mainly with electricity. That supports at least three distinct job lines:

  1. Gas furnace replacement and repair, the traditional core.
  2. Cold-climate heat pumps in gas-heated homes, often sold as an addition to the existing system.
  3. Heat pumps in electrically heated homes, replacing or supplementing electric furnaces and baseboards.

Each has its own average invoice, gross margin and close rate. Our margin mapping sets a ceiling for each, so a heat pump campaign is not judged against furnace numbers.

Climate and the Manitoba calendar

Manitoba's prairie winters are long and very cold, and the heating season ranks among the longest in southern Canada. Peak demand is deep and sustained, and the shoulder months are brief.

That favours two habits. First, have maintenance member visits booked before the first deep cold, because there is little room afterward. Second, run heat pump quote campaigns in late spring and early fall, when homeowners have time and crews have capacity. The job mix and shoulder seasons guide shows how to plan the months.

Programs to know, as of October 2026

  • The Efficiency Manitoba Air Source Heat Pump Rebate pays $2,000 toward a ducted cold-climate unit, or $1,500 toward a ductless one, when it goes into an existing home that is the owner's main residence. Registered suppliers receive a $100 bonus on applications that include an F280 heat-load calculation, for applications before March 31, 2027.
  • Efficiency Manitoba delivers the first Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program agreement, announced September 12, 2025, with nearly $30 million in federal funding for no-cost direct-install retrofits for lower- and median-income homeowners and tenants.
  • The federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program closed to Manitoba applicants on July 31, 2026.

The profit implication. A $1,500 or $2,000 rebate changes the customer's decision on a heat pump quote. Clear rebate pages and quote follow-up that walks customers through the application can lift your close rate, which lowers cost per sold install. Keep claims precise and link the program, since terms can change.

How we would approach a Manitoba plan

  1. Separate gas, heat-pump-in-gas-home and heat-pump-in-electric-home work in the margin map and in campaigns.
  2. Build rebate-accurate heat pump pages and follow-up, and measure close rate before and after.
  3. Book members early and use maintenance agreement marketing to protect the short shoulder seasons.
  4. Track cost per booked job separately for Winnipeg and for regional centres.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth becoming a registered supplier for Efficiency Manitoba rebates?

That is a business decision only you can make, and eligibility rules come from Efficiency Manitoba. From a marketing view, being able to explain the rebate process clearly to customers usually helps close heat pump quotes.

Should a Winnipeg company market heat pumps or furnaces?

Usually both, with separate pages, campaigns and ceilings. Manitoba has a large gas-heated base and a large electric-heated base, and the buyers ask different questions.

Who licenses gas fitters and electricians in Manitoba?

The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner issues gas and oil tradesperson licences and electrician licences, among other duties. We link it for reference only and do not give licensing advice.
